Summer brings about temperatures and weather conditions that tend to be hard on trees. Whether a drought or just a hot, dry day, summer weather is not ideal for your trees. Time of Day

Once mid-afternoon hits, the temperature will reach its peak. Because it will reach the highest temperature of the day in the afternoon, all water within the ground will have evaporated by the time the sun does down. Therefore, the best time to water your trees would be in the morning rather than the afternoon. Doing so allows the tree ample time to absorb the water before it is gone into the air. 

Though this is an excellent general rule of thumb, many factors could cause the outcome to be different. Things like size, maturity, and location of your tree are all factors that could change your watering schedule. 

When to Water

The best and most efficient way to check to see if your trees need water is to check the soil at the tree base. The soil should be moist, not too soggy, and not too dry. If you notice that the soil is dry, it is a sign to water your trees.

How Often

Though it depends on size, maturity, and location, there are a few general rules to follow regarding how often to water your trees. Generally, you should be watering your trees about every three days with five gallons of water, give or take. As goes for when to water, check the soil if you are second-guessing yourself.

Though sprinklers are easy to set up and allow you to complete other tasks while they are on, they are not the most efficient way to water your trees. Sprinklers lose a lot of water to evaporation before even reaching the ground. The best tool to use to water your trees is simple, your garden hose! Your garden hose allows you to have complete control over how much water and where exactly it is going; you can get water directly to the roots.
